Kancho Sasaki Toshiatsu, born in 24th August, 1942 at Bibai City, Hokkaido, Japan, to Kouzou and Yoshi, founded the Japan Karate Maruyoshikai Organization (JKMO) in 1965. A 9th Dan Shotokan master and early World Karate Federation (WKF) referee, Sasaki Toshiatsu began his karate journey at age 15 under the legendary Masatoshi Nakayama, a direct disciple of Gichin Funakoshi. With a sharp mind honed by studies in Economics, Sasaki Toshiatsu’s vision for JKMO was unyielding: forge karate as pure as iron, as precise as a blade.

Among the early pioneers was Shihan Ganapathipillai Ramachandran from Batticaloa, associated with the Budokan Karate tradition. A highly respected figure, he served four times as the President of the Sri Lanka Karate Federation and also led the Referee Committee. His leadership laid the foundation for the formation of the Japan Karate Maruyoshikai Organization in Sri Lanka, which was fully established with the arrival of Sasaki Toshiatsu in 1999.

Originally, the martial art Te (“Hand”) developed in Okinawa as a system of self-defense. Due to Okinawa’s frequent contact and exchange with China, it is certain that the Okinawan martial art was influenced by Chinese kempo at some point during its development. However, with only oral tradition and no formal contemporary written records, it is not certain exactly when the art called Kara-Te first emerged in Okinawa. It is believed that it developed roughly 500 years ago, when the dynastic ruler King Shoha unified the region after decades of warfare and issued an edict banning the possession of weapons on the island.
The JKMO karate philosophy emphasizes balance, unity, and personal growth through kihon, kata, and kumite. These practices form an inseparable trinity, refining techniques and fostering effortless movement and mental clarity. Rooted in Bushido, JKMO cultivates a harmonious mind-body connection, promoting strength, peace, and humility. Guided by the Dojo Kun, students embrace honesty, effort, respect, and emotional control, striving for wholeness both in the dojo and in life.
The foundation of karate is the kihon (basic techniques), the kata (forms), and the kumite (sparring). Upon these three rest all technique, all speed, all strength and all progress in karate. They are, in essence, one. And they must be studied as one: without the kihon basic techniques, there can be neither kata nor kumite. Likewise, kata separated from kumite is simply rote movement unseasoned with the knowledge that comes from application. Finally, kumite without kata loses the characteristic agility and effortless smoothness inherent in karate. Kihon is kata is kumite.
At JKMO Organizations, all our instructors are specially trained and licensed to teach. Each of them must train extensively and complete the JKMO’s unique specialist instructor training program before receiving certification to fulfil the various functions they are responsible for within the JKMO.
The JKMO offers three basic kinds of qualifications: authorized Instructor qualifications (for teaching karate); authorized Judge qualifications (for judging and refereeing at tournaments); and authorized Examiner qualifications (for testing and evaluating Dan, instructors and other types of qualification). Typically, it is only those who are already qualified instructors who are eligible for the other two types.
There are 10 Kyu and 10 Dan in JKMO karate. To obtain certification for each rank, you must fulfil the certification requirements and complete the testing procedure. Testing – or grading – is carried out by a panel of instructors authorized as JKMO technical examiners.
Typically, Dan grading sessions take place 01 times per year. In order to be eligible for testing, you must first have gained the appropriate amount of continuous experience at your current rank. Then, depending on the level of Dan you are being graded for, you may have to take in your own country or region.
The JKMO Karate Organization has grown into a prominent international institution through the dedicated efforts of its founder, Kancho Sasaki Toshiatsu. Its branches continue to uphold and advance the art of Karate in accordance with his teachings and Techniques. The distinguished instructors trained by him possess the capability to carry forward Sasaki’s legacy for generations to come.
